Promenade de la Hoëgne: A beautiful walk in the Hoëgne valley

When someone asks me what the most beautiful hiking trail in Belgium is, I answer without hesitation: Promenade de la Hoëgne. This route, which follows the Hoëgne River through the heart of a forest, is in many ways comparable to the Ninglinspo hike—only a bit more spectacular! And quieter…

Expect numerous wooden bridges, rocks to scramble over, and a gently flowing river full of small waterfalls. In the middle of the hike, I felt as if I were in Slovenia rather than Belgium—pure magic!

Practical Information

Starting at Pont de Belleheid

As the name suggests, the hike starts at a bridge—Pont de Belleheid. Here, you’ll also find Parking La Hoëgne, where you can park your car easily and for free. However, it’s best to arrive early, as the parking lot can fill up on beautiful summer days. To get to this parking area, you actually have to drive… through the water. Yes, really!

At the start, you’ll also find an information board with details about the trail. You’ll be following the blue cross markers for 10 km, so be sure to take a photo of the board to avoid getting lost.

The Hiking Route

The trailhead is clearly marked with a wooden arch that reads Promenade de la Hoëgne. Walking through this arch means you have officially begun the route. The first half follows the La Hoëgne River, with multiple crossings over wooden bridges. You’ll walk right next to the water, clamber over rocks, and traverse higher forest paths—be careful not to trip over tree roots!

Halfway through, the route veers away from the river, leading you along a higher section of the trail. This return path is much flatter and easier to walk, making the first part of the hike the most challenging.

Although the return journey is slightly less exciting, there is a beautiful viewpoint with rocks, perfect for taking a great photo or simply sitting down to enjoy the scenery. After this, a forest path leads you back down to the starting point.

When you reach the parking area again, you have the option to grab a bite or a drink at Chalet du Pont de Belleheid, a brasserie-restaurant. Keep in mind that they are only open on weekends! They also take a break between lunch and dinner service, so you won’t be able to drop in for a drink at 5 PM.

Good to Know

  • Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash.
  • The trail is not suitable for strollers.
  • It’s best to avoid this hike during peak tourist season.
  • Check in advance if there is an active hunting season in the area.
